Introduction

Though India is rich in education, many Indian students dream of completing their medical education abroad.

Ever wondered why these students see a foreign land as more promising than their own motherland?

Yes! Finances are definitely one of the major reasons students choose to move abroad for further studies.

However, other reasons include the high competition rate in Indian Medical Universities.

It feels like a never-ending battle for medical students to get seats in Government colleges.

Apart from that, do you know that the lectures are so crowded in Indian Universities?

Guidance on a personal level always helps to understand the concepts and clear doubts more efficiently.

Let us see some more reasons why many Indians are choosing MBBS in Russia instead of India.

MBBS in Russia vs MBBS in India

Comparing the Indian and Russian Medical Universities would give you clarity on why Russia is indeed the best choice for students who want to study MBBS abroad. Let’s start

Comparison of MBBS Education in Russia and India

Aspect Russia India
Hospitals
  • Medical students are allowed to practice in every city hospital, and affiliation with the university is not mandatory.
  • Medical students are only allowed to practice in a hospital affiliated with the university.
Clinical Exposure
  • In Russia, students have to attend pre-clinical classes for the first three years of their MBBS course.
  • From the 4th year onwards, morning lectures would be conducted for 4 hours only.
  • Then further studies would be undergone in the hospital, wherein the teacher who is also a practicing doctor of the hospital would teach the students practically while examining and treating the patient.
  • This practice allows the students to have better communication with the patients, improves their diagnostic skills, and helps them to implement textbook knowledge into real-life situations for 3 whole years.
  • In Indian Medical Universities, students are only allowed to see patients in the last year (internship) of their MBBS course.
  • Hence their knowledge is practically executed for only 12 months.
Education Pattern
  • In Russia, the class strength of 200 students is divided into smaller groups of 10 to 15 students to ensure personal attention from the teacher is available for every student.
  • This practice ensures utmost concentration from the student’s end and high-quality conceptual teachings from the professor’s end, leaving behind zero room for misbehavior and lack of focus.
  • In India, the class strength varies somewhere from 200 to 250 students which are divided into a group of 40 students.
  • It becomes difficult for the teacher to give personal attention to every student’s needs, and it is tough for students to receive and integrate the conceptual understanding due to distractions.
Cadaveric Dissection
  • Since the class strength is shortened in Russian universities, every student has access to practice dissection on the cadaver personally.
  • This improves their conceptual understanding of various complications that may cause the death of an individual.
  • It also improves their dissecting techniques to have perfection while working with alive patients.
  • It becomes impossible for each of the 40 students of a class to dissect one cadaver.
  • Although simulation labs have improved the physical practice that aspiring doctors get, they can still not replace the benefits that a student would get by working on a corpse.
  • It limits the opportunity for the students to have hands-on practice.
Tuition Fee
  • Cost of MBBS in Russia is approx. 30 lakhs.
  • This amount can easily be earned back after 2.5 years of your career.
  • Private Indian Medical Universities can charge up to 100 lakh rupees.
  • The return on investment in this situation is quite low as the monthly salary you would get after MBBS is approximately 90,000 INR to 1,00,000 INR.
Attendance
  • Here you need to maintain 100% of attendance.
  • If you do take leaves (which is not allowed for more than one or two days), you must communicate with your respective professor.
  • They would appoint a different time for you to recover your lost attendance.
  • They take tests almost every day after or during lectures, and a cumulative mark is prepared.
  • This forces the students to pay attention in class, which benefits them in the long run.
  • You are supposed to maintain an attendance of a minimum of 75% or more in India.
  • This may cause a disruption in the flow of your understanding.

Note

In India, the last year of the MBBS course is dedicated for the internship.

However, In Russia, the universities don’t have a separate year for internship, instead from 4th year onwards students can start their internship in any hospitals of the city during their summer vacations/program.

This allows students to have clinical exposure early on which results in better communication skills, diagnostic skills and surgical skills such as precise incision, drainage of an abscess, suturing & knot tying, excising a skin lesion, & usage of local anaesthetic.
